Completed Corridor Study
The County Road 47 Corridor Study was completed at the end of May 2020, in coordination with Hennepin County. Read the County Road 47 Study Full Report (PDF). The study was presented to the Plymouth City Council in June 2020 to outline the findings and potential next steps.
Background Information
Plymouth residents and motorists have shared a variety of concerns regarding County Road 47 in the last decade, including speed limits, a lack of pedestrian facilities, lack of turn lanes, and the need for improved intersections and pedestrian crossings.
Though County Road 47 was a Hennepin County roadway, the City of Plymouth took a proactive approach with a study of the entire corridor in 2019.
The study, in partnership with the county, examined the east-west corridor from Northwest Boulevard to County Road 101 (Brockton Lane) near the Maple Grove border. The scope of the study included:
- Gathering public feedback
- Conducting a traffic study and drainage analysis
- Preparing a preferred layout (what the corridor should look like based on data and feedback)
- Developing an action plan
County Road 47 Renamed Chankahda Trail
The Plymouth City Council selected a new name for County Road 47 – Chankahda Trail. The change became effective Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022.
Chankahda (Chan-KAH-da), a Dakota word that loosely translates to “near the woods,” was selected in honor of past land and the people of Plymouth who first inhabited the area.
Learn more about the new name from the Aug. 18 announcement.
Transferring County Road 47 to the City
The City of Plymouth approved a jurisdictional transfer with Hennepin County to take over ownership of the roadway in order to make necessary safety improvements.
Prior to the transfer, the city completed a corridor study in partnership with Hennepin County and led the development of a preliminary design of the entire corridor (see information above).
Throughout these processes, the city completed a robust community engagement initiative to identify the community/user needs for the project.
Public Feedback
Public Feedback was collected s part of the study. In addition to collecting comment cards and emails, an open house was held in March, 2021 to collect input and the public was asked to participate in an interactive online feedback map. View the Public Engagement Summary (PDF).
