After moving into a new home, residents can apply for homestead. Qualifying applicants can receive a market value exclusion, which may reduce their property taxes the following year.

Once granted homestead classification, residents do not need to reapply for that property. Residents must notify the assessor within 30 days if they move or sell the property, or in the event of changes in marital status or spouse occupancy.

Homestead is a Minnesota property tax classification for residential properties occupied as a primary residence by the owner or qualifying relative of the owner. View the state statute

Apply Online

Residents can apply for homestead online at hennepin.us/homestead. The application uses a secure server and information will not be shared with outside parties. Residents can also track the status of online applications. A valid email address is required.

Note: All applications must include a copy of the deed and certificate of real estate value or the document recording numbers, provided in the closing packet.
