Crime can happen any time of year, but as the weather warms, some reported crimes tend to increase, and the Plymouth Police Department offers tips to prevent them.
Summers typically see a rise in crimes of opportunity, including items stolen from vehicles and homes. The majority of burglaries reported in Plymouth are unforced – meaning the burglar took advantage of unsecured homes. In some cases, thieves use garage door openers from unlocked cars to gain access to residences.
By practicing good safety habits and always locking up, homeowners can reduce the chances of these crimes occurring. Watch the below Along for the Ride segment with Plymouth police officers to learn about safety tips. The video is also available on YouTube.
The Plymouth Police Department offers some crime prevention tips for residents heading into summer:
Park cars in a locked garage whenever possible
If cars must be parked in a driveway, ensure that doors are locked and remove all valuables from vehicles
Keep garage door openers out of sight in a locked car
When away, homeowners should make homes look occupied by using light timers
Consider an alarm system and/or surveillance cameras
Use locks on windows and secure sliding doors
Use high-quality deadbolt locks on entrances and garage service doors
Increase the use of exterior lighting around the home
