The Police Department's mission (PDF) is to provide the highest level of protection and service to all who live in, work in or visit our community.
The department enforces federal and state laws, as well as city ordinances. City ordinances include those related to animals, noise, nuisances and alarm systems.
Staff members respond to traffic crashes, medical situations and other emergency service calls. The Police Department also coordinates a variety of crime prevention programs for citizens, businesses and schools.
The Police Department originated in 1958 as part of the Village of Plymouth. Five police chiefs have led the department since that time:
- Claude Lien – 1959 to 1969
- Calvin Hawkinson – 1969 to 1979
- Richard Carlquist – 1979 to 1991
- Craig Gerdes – 1992 to 2004
- Michael S. Goldstein – 2004 to present
From 1979 through 2000, the city had a combined Public Safety Department with both the police and fire departments under a Public Safety Director/Police Chief.
